The Atlas of Light and Specular Microscopy of the Cornea, with a specific focus on the corneal endothelium, offers a collection of photographs featuring healthy and diseased corneas, as well as those prepared for grafting. The images are captured from either patient or donor corneas. The first section of the atlas showcases healthy corneas and their individual layers, including the superficial and basal cells of the epithelium, subepithelial nerve plexus, stroma and keratocytes, and the endothelium, with additional coverage of blood vessels and palisades of Vogt in the limbus. The second section of the atlas highlights corneas processed for grafting, with an emphasis on the endothelial layer. The section also covers the primary reasons why corneas are excluded from grafting, such as the presence of dead cells, polymegathism, pleomorphism, cornea guttata or stromal scars. The third section presents corneas before and after storage in tissue cultures or hypothermic conditions to assess their suitability for grafting. The final section features photographs of pathological corneal explants. This atlas is designed for ophthalmologists, cornea specialists, researchers, and students interested in the cornea’s structure and pathologies.
